Freddie Mac Primary Mortgage Market Survey (PMMS) — The industry standard for 30-year and 15-year fixed mortgage rates. Published weekly, every Thursday. When we say "mortgage rates this week," this is the source. Data is a national average based on applications from lenders across the US.
Mortgage News Daily — Daily rate tracking for more granular movement between Thursday PMMS releases. Used for intra-week commentary.
Home prices
National Association of Realtors (NAR) — Existing Home Sales — Monthly report covering median existing home prices nationally and by region. Published around the 20th of each month. This is monthly data — we never present it as a daily figure.
Zillow Research — Zillow Home Value Index (ZHVI) for city and metro-level price data, days on market, and inventory metrics. Updated monthly.
Redfin Data Center — Weekly and monthly housing market data including median sale price, homes sold, and days on market by metro.
Market conditions
NAR Existing Home Sales — Months of supply (inventory) data used to classify markets as buyer's, seller's, or balanced. Under 4 months = seller's market; over 6 = buyer's market.
IPX1031 Research — Buyer and seller sentiment surveys, first-time buyer data, and investor market statistics.
Demographics and buyer trends
NAR Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers — Annual survey covering buyer age, income, first-time buyer share, down payment data, and purchase motivation. Published annually; we cite the year clearly.
US Census Bureau — Housing Data — Housing starts, completions, homeownership rates by age and income. Used for demographic context.
Economic context
Federal Reserve — Fed funds rate decisions, FOMC meeting statements, and economic projections. Used for rate context in mortgage articles.
Bureau of Labor Statistics — CPI — Inflation data used for economic context when discussing rate movements.
City and state data
Zillow Research Data Downloads — Raw ZHVI data by metro and zip code. Used for city spotlight articles.
Redfin Data Center — Metro-level data including sale-to-list ratio, bidding war rates, and migration patterns.
Our editorial rules on data
Every number published must have a source name and date. Monthly data (NAR median price, days on market) is never presented as a daily figure. When data is preliminary or estimated, we say so. When sources disagree, we note it. When we don't have a current figure, we don't guess.
